Pinot noir 2003

Published on December 12, 2005

tasting notes

Bright purple-red colour, moderate depth.  Complex nose with red cherries, a hint of strawberry and understated charred oak.  The palate has good weight, with some power and structure.  Sweet fruit on the mid palate gives way to dry, but balanced tannin astringency.

vineyard

Sarsfield Estate Vineyard is located in the Lakes and Wilderness area of East Gippsland, Victoria. Vines and crop levels are carefully managed to produce grapes of the highest quality.

vintage

2003 was one of the warmest and certainly an extremely dry year with only 45% of the average rainfall. The main problem was the smoke of the severe bushfires, which covered the vineyard for weeks, but overall 2003 was an excellent vintage.

winemaking

Fermented in small batches, hand plunged and pressed in a hand-operated basket press. The wine is matured in French oak barriques for 18 months and bottled unfiltered.
Alcohol: 14.1%, Titr. Acidity: 6.1 g/L, pH: 3.47
